June is Pride Month

By Jim Forte June 07, 2022

While our theme of "Patriot Flags" may not seem to work with rainbow flags and Pride month, there is that nagging thing called free speech. Patriots love free speech and we DO sell flags. There is a section of the population that has this viewpoint and if as conservatives we are going to espouse free speech and freedom this is but another facet of that philosophy. Plenty of flag buyers, including the FBI, NASA and many embassies are putting up the flags we supply the demand. So remember when YOUR flag starts to get banned your response is "free speech" well here is where we practice what we preach.

What is Pride Month?

Pride Month is each year in June, to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on our history - locally, nationally, and internationally. Learn more from the Library of Congress.

Progress is not always simple, and often the same battles must be revisited again and again. In 2019, ongoing legal cases continue to inform evolving equal rights legislation that currently affect the LGBTQIA+ community. In reflection of this month's celebration, we remember how far we've come in the 50 years since the Stonewall Riots, confident that we will keep moving forward.

A note about LGBTQIA+ These letters stand for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual. The + sign in this context recognizes that our understanding of labels and vocabulary is personal, and continues to evolve.

Most conservative gays we have talked to just like the plain old rainbow flag and say "we are gay get over it" no need to have a bunch of letters. I concur. But there is a swath of the community that want specific recognition, well, its a free country last time I checked.

What is the Rainbow Flag?

Yeah you thought the rainbow was a symbol of God's promise to Noah never to flood the earth and kill all the sinners. Here is the story of the rainbow flag.

Gilbert Baker, designer of the rainbow pride flag, was born June 2 1951. The original rainbow flag was unveiled at San Francisco Pride in 1978, with colors intended to reflect the diversity of the LGBT community. In 2015, the Museum of Modern Art ranked the rainbow flag as an internationally recognized symbol as important as the recycling symbol.

n its original design, each of the eight stripes had a specific meaning:

• Pink: Sex
• Red: Life
• Orange: Healing
• Yellow: Sunlight
• Green: Nature
• Turquoise: Art
• Indigo: Harmony
• Violet: Spirit

Originally, each flag was hand sewn and dyed, but as demand grew, they had to shift to mass production. Production issues involving the availability of certain dye colors led to the removal of pink and turquoise, and indigo was changed to a more common blue color. The resulting six-color flag is now the most common version of the LGBTQ+ flag.

What is the Intersex Rainbow Pride Flag?

In the year 2021, Valentino Vecchietti of Intersex Equality Rights UK redesigned the Progress Pride flag to incorporate the intersex flag. This design added a yellow triangle with a purple circle in it to the chevron of the Progress Pride flag. Intersex Equality Rights UK posted the new flag on Instagram and Twitter, and it since went viral on social media. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_flag_(LGBT)
